Why Seed Policy?
What have rare and old varieties got to do with politics? The answer is: a lot. Parliaments and governments set the rules of action on fields, garden beets and markets. Therefore, ARCHE NOAH are actively advocating for better laws. We stand up for a policy that promotes biodiversity, ensures healthy and tasty food and protects the rights of small-scale farmers.

26 November: expert hearing on the seed regulation in the EU Parliament: The seed regulation now enters into hot phase of negotiations. On Tuesday, experts are given the opportunity to express their opinion on the planned regulation. Among the invitees is also Rapf Klaus, boardmember of ARCHE NOAH. Since a few weeks the report of Sergio Silvestris, rapporteur of the EU's agricultural committee, is available and reinforces again the concerns of GLOBAL 2000 and the NOAH'S ARK. A close relationship between the reporteur and the seed industry shows in an event of the European Seed Association, the umbrella organization of the seed industry in Europe, held under the auspices of Silvestris in the EU Parliament. 24 November: Seed Declaration adopted during NGO meeting in Vienna. The EU Seed Law serves the seed industry and threatens Biodiversity. From 23-24 November, ARCHE NOAH welcomed 40 participants from 20 European countries to the Workshop "How to protect our Seeds". MEP Karin Kadenbach and representative of the European Commission Heinz Miko joined the meeting on Sunday to discuss with the NGOs their concerns and proposals regarding the Commission´s Proposal on a EU seed regulation. Start of negotiations!
September 30: Start of negotiations! The Committee on Agriculture of the EU-Parliament has begun negotiations on the new EU seed law. Austrian EU-delegates spoke out on behalf of freedom of choice for consumers and the preservation of seed diversity. EU-delegates have until December 4th to propose changes and improvements on the new law. Mid-April 2014 the law will come up for vote.
